So, a couple of the guys at the house here are from more northern climes and are pretty rabid hockey fans. Growing up in Kentucky hockey has been a pretty non-existent sport to me (save the ill-fated "Louisville River Frogs" minor league hockey team that lasted all of three or so years back in the 90's). It was something akin to soccer, only played on ice. So, I went to a hockey game this afternoon with a couple of the guys (Fr. John and Br. Jim). Must say that it was a good time. The Capitals ended up winning three to one, scoring three goals in an exciting third period. Hockey fans, it seems to me, are a pretty enthusiastic bunch. They hardly stop cheering, are nearly all clad in a hockey jersey, and seem to be really in to the sport; all things which I can dig. It's fast-paced and I can appreciate the skill involved to stay erect on ice skates without breaking bones. But alas, should there be a budding hockey fan here, I will soon be returning to the land where hockey is but an obscurity on the sports spectrum. I hate to say it, but after this afternoon, that might be a bad thing...
Attending St. Greg's http://www.stgregorysacademy.com/ in early high school, I played hockey there. The river frogs logo was printed out and hung above my bed. I like it the best of all the sports I played but once returning to Meade there wasn't anyone to play with so it eventually left my main interests. U of L has a team but I spent most of the one semester riding the pine pony.
It has been on my list to see a Capitals game. Too bad you'll be back in KY before I'm there in time to see another with you.
Ultramontanism is a religious philosophy within the Catholic Church that places strong emphasis on the prerogatives and powers of the pope. In particular, ultramontanism asserts the superiority of Papal authority over the authority of local temporal power.
The term originates in ecclesiastical language from the Middle Ages and means literally "beyond the mountains" (referring to the Alps).
The word was revived after the Protestant Reformation in France. In France, the name "ultramontain" was applied to people who supported papal authority in French political affairs. "The man beyond the mountains" referred to the pope, located in Italy.
Those of an Ultramontanist philosophy take comfort in the retention of doctrinal and disciplinary supremacy by the Roman Pontiff and the Roman Curia which serves and represents him.
